Similar to Trades Dual Credit programs, Academic Dual Credit allows students in Grades 11 and 12 to take courses through a post-secondary training institution while still in high school. These courses count as elective credits, and tuition is paid by the school district.
Key Guidelines:
- There is no limit to the number of dual credit courses a student may take, as long as they begin the courses before high school graduation (i.e., in Grade 11 or 12).
- Students may take dual credit courses across multiple school years.
- Regardless of the student’s grade level, all dual credit courses count as Grade 12 elective credits.
- Students can earn as many elective credits as they wish; the 28 elective credits required for the Dogwood Diploma represent a minimum, not a maximum.
- To participate, students must have a post-secondary transition plan that includes all dual credit courses they intend to take.
- The plan must clearly state the post-secondary credential the student is working toward.
- All listed courses must be required for that credential, meaning:
- The course will appear on the student’s official post-secondary transcript.
- The credential cannot be awarded without successful completion of the course.
Important:
A student is not eligible for course funding if the course is not part of a planned credential outlined in their transition plan.
